Photographs: Jabiluka protests around Australia

The corporate campaign was a vital part of stopping the Jabiluka mine. Campaigners targeted investors in North Limited including Westpac and ANZ. Shareholders in North Ltd – ERA’s parent company – called for and achieved an extraordinary general meeting on Jabiluka. Despite the company’s efforts to stop it the extraordinary general meeting was held in October 1999. Rio Tinto purchased North Ltd in August 2000. The change of ownership signalled a new approach by the parent company and paved the way for negotiations regarding the future of Jabiluka. The fate of Jabiluka is now firmly in the hands of the Mirarr Traditional Owners.
